Sensory Modes of Communication - Film, Animation, Sound
Film, sound, animation - these are what we call the 'sensory' modes of communication, and we believe they should be integral to our industry due to their accessibility to the wider public outside of the architecture world. Film allows us to bring the elements of temporality - especially when dealing with seasonality in landscape - real emotion, and atmosphere into our projects, in a complementary way to ‘static’ modes of communication, such as drawing, image, and writing.
The Dissertation by Other Means
To this end, the University of Sheffield opened up a new way for students to submit their final MA thesis’ - called The Dissertation by Other Means, off the back of Mohammed Khizr’s submission of a film for his final year thesis and a continued effort to see more sensory modes of storytelling in the course.
Practice - Mohammed Khizr has delivered CPD’s at a number of architectural practices, including Hawkins Brown, Levitt Bernstein, Tate Hindle, JTP, Cullinan Studio, and Metropolitan Workshop.
Academia - Mohammed Khizr is a visiting lecturer for the MA Architecture, MA Landscape Architecture, and MA Urban Design courses at The University of Sheffield, where we explore the concept above in greater detail and with practicals.
This has taken various formats:
The M.Arch and M.AUD courses has taken the form of a series of workshops to assist students with their projects
The M.LA course has taken the form of an optional module the students
